Most of my life, I believed success worked in a simple order.
First, you achieve the result.
Then you become the person.
Get fit, then feel confident.
Make money, then think abundantly.
Build the business, then see yourself as successful.
Reach the goal, then change your identity.
It sounds logical.
The problem is that life rarely works that way.
Over time, I’ve noticed that the people who create meaningful change often reverse the process. They begin carrying themselves differently long before the external evidence arrives.
They don’t wait to feel confident before speaking up.
They don’t wait to become successful before acting professionally.
They don’t wait for the perfect circumstances before taking responsibility for their future.
They begin becoming the person first.
And that shift changes everything.
I remember spending years believing certain goals were outside my reach because I was focused entirely on the outcome. I was asking, “How do I get there?” when a better question would have been, “Who do I need to become?”
Because every meaningful goal has an identity attached to it.
Healthy people don’t constantly negotiate with themselves about exercise. They see movement as part of who they are.
Writers write.
Leaders lead.
Disciplined people follow through.
Not because they’re always motivated, but because their actions align with their identity.
The breakthrough for me came when I stopped obsessing over results and started paying attention to behaviour.
How would the person I want to become spend this afternoon?
How would they handle this setback?
What would they focus on?
What would they stop tolerating?
Those questions quietly changed the direction of my life.
Not overnight.
But consistently.
The interesting thing about identity is that it creates momentum. Once you begin seeing yourself differently, decisions become easier. You no longer need to force every action because those actions start feeling congruent with who you’re becoming.
And that’s where many people get stuck.
They’re waiting for certainty.
Waiting for confidence.
Waiting for proof.
But confidence often arrives after action. Clarity often arrives after movement. The path becomes visible while you’re walking, not while you’re standing still.
I’ve learned that the future version of ourselves isn’t waiting somewhere ahead of us. It’s being built through the choices we make today.
Every decision is a vote.
Every action is evidence.
Every small promise kept to yourself strengthens the identity you’re creating.
So this week, stop asking what result you need before you change.
Instead ask:
Who would I need to be if this goal were already achieved?
Then practice being that person today.
Speak like them.
Think like them.
Work like them.
Carry yourself like them.
Because when you start walking as your future self, something remarkable happens.
The path you’ve been searching for begins to appear beneath your feet.
